Luke French Sent Down, What Does it Mean?

Quick thoughts on today’s news that Luke French is being sent to AAA :

That leaves Jesus Colome and Garret Olson as only remaining candidates in camp for long relief role, assuming they go with 12 pitchers. The staff would look like this:

1. Felix
2. Snell
3. RRS
4. Vargas
5. Fister
6. Aardsma
7. Lowe
8. League
9. Kelley
10. White
11. Texeira
12. Long reliever

Possible meanings:

1. Jesus Colome makes the team – the team would need to find a 40 man spot for him. Plus, he’s not really a multiple inning guy.

2. Olson makes team. Weird because he hasn’t had a good spring and he has options left.

3. They are going with 11 pitchers, which might indicate they want another OF. Ryan Langerhans is the obvious choice but he is battling an elbow problem and might have to start the year on the DL. Corey Paterson would be the next option but he is not on the 40-man roster either.

4. They are making at least one move between now and Sunday when rosters have to be set.

If I had to bet, it would be on either Option 3 or 4. The first two just don’t feel right. We’ll break this down in detail on the show at 11:25.

According to Shannon Drayer, Cliff Lee is throwing today. I would think the results of that session would be VERY important in determining the shape of this roster going forward. She’ll join the show at 11:40 to tell us all about it.
