Seahawks’ Richard Sherman voices his opinion on Heisman Trophy race

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has never been afraid to be a mouthpiece for the underrepresented, and that holds true for his alma mater.

“Apparently I have to say this … because no one will campaign for him, but Christian McCaffrey for Heisman,” Sherman said while speaking with fellow former Stanford Cardinal Dave Wyman on 710 ESPN Seattle’s “The Huddle” on Thursday. “Let’s make that happen.”

McCaffrey, the sophomore who leads the nation in all-purpose yards per game (259.1), has led Stanford to a 6-1 record, with 200-plus rushing/receiving yards in three of his past four games. He is currently listed as No. 3 on ESPN’s Heisman Watch.

Despite the compulsion to promote his fellow Cardinal, Sherman acknowledged that eighth-ranked Stanford has come a long way from his years when it was called “the library.”

“Now we’re a powerhouse,” said Sherman, who played for the 2010 Stanford team that finished 12-1 and won the Orange Bowl.

Quarterback Jim Plunkett is the only Stanford player to ever win the Heisman Trophy, doing so in 1970. Three others finished second: quarterback John Elway (1982), running back Toby Gerhart (2009) and quarterback Andrew Luck (2010, 2011).

“I think the best class they’ve ever had is the class that’s playing right now,” Sherman said. “And hopefully they can keep getting them in, but I’m excited. Christian McCaffery for Heisman.”
