It’s not a surprise that Seahawks rookie Coby Bryant will get a chance to play a key role out of the gate this season for Seattle’s defense. It is a surprise which position he’ll be at, however.

Bryant, a Cincinnati product and the 2021 Jim Thorpe Award winner as the best defensive back in college football, won’t be playing outside cornerback to begin the season like expected. Instead, he has won the nickel cornerback job, a development made all the more unexpected considering the Seahawks brought back familiar face Justin Coleman this offseason to compete for that spot.
So how did Bryant end up in the nickel spot, and what should we expect out of him this season? Former NFL wide receiver Michael Bumpus is here to help us understand in his latest Seahawks breakdown video, which you can watch at the top of this post.
Bump, who hosts the Seahawks Radio Network pregame and postgame shows in addition to his day job as Bump and Stacy co-host on Seattle Sports, delves into how the nickel corner battle went down in training camp and the preseason, and why Bryant became the choice despite most of his experience being from playing on the outside at cornerback.
