The first Seattle Kraken season may be in the books, but the action continues in another way for them on Tuesday.
Seattle Kraken offseason primer: Key dates and decisions
The annual NHL Draft Lottery will take place at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday from the NHL Network’s studios in Secaucus, N.J., and the Kraken have the third-best odds at winning the league’s top overall pick in the draft set for July 7-8 in Montreal. The event will be televised on ESPN and ESPN+.
This is the second straight year the Seattle Kraken have been slotted third in the odds, but they actually have a better chance than in 2021. Because of their status as an expansion team, they were given the same odds as the No. 4 team last year at 10.3%, but they’re all alone in third this year at 11.5%. The Kraken slightly improved upon their odds in 2021 and received the No. 2 overall selection, which they used on Michigan’s Matty Beniers, who had a strong debut after joining the team in mid-April.
The Kraken finished their inaugural NHL season with a 27-49-6 record, good for 60 points in the standings. That was third-worst in the league, with only the Arizona Coyotes (57 points) and Montreal Canadiens (55) lower. And needless to say, with the draft set to be in Montreal, the prevailing storyline going into Tuesday’s lottery is if the Canadiens will secure the top pick to make in front of their hometown fans.
The top 16 picks in the NHL Draft are determined by way of the lottery, with the rest determined by reverse order of points in the standings from the 2021-22 regular season. The lottery participants are the teams that missed out on the Stanley Cup playoffs unless altered by trade.
Here are the odds for the top pick in the NHL Draft Lottery:
• Montreal Canadiens 18.5%
• Arizona Coyotes 13.5%
• Seattle Kraken 11.5%
• Philadelphia Flyers 9.5%
• New Jersey Devils 8.5%
• Chicago Blackhawks 7.5%
• Ottawa Senators 6.5%
• Detroit Red Wings 6.0%
• Buffalo Sabres 5.0%
• Anaheim Ducks 3.5%
• San Jose Sharks 3.0%
• Columbus Blue Jackets 2.5%
• New York Islanders 2.0%
• Winnipeg Jets 1.5%
• Vancouver Canucks 0.5%
• Vegas Golden Knights 0.5%
