After rain caused the start of Saturday’s matchup between the Mariners and Chicago White Sox to be delayed by more than an hour, the rain returned in the third inning with the game still scoreless.

As a result, Saturday’s game has been suspended and will resume on Sunday starting at 11:10 a.m. Coverage for that game will begin here on 710 ESPN Seattle at 9 a.m. with Mariners Magazine, followed by the Mariners Pregame Show at 10 a.m.
After the continuation of Saturday’s game is concluded, the Mariners and White Sox will play their regularly-scheduled Sunday contest, but that game will be just seven innings like other games in doubleheaders during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The first game will still be a nine-inning contest that will start 30-45 minutes after the first game concludes.

As noted, the game on Saturday was scoreless after the top half of the third inning. That was because both starting pitchers were sharp to start the contest.
For the White Sox, veteran Lance Lynn tossed three scoreless innings and had four strikeouts while walking catcher Luis Torrens and center fielder Taylor Trammell.
For the Mariners, rookie right-hander Logan Gilbert was making his eighth career start and he appeared on his game early on against a tough Chicago lineup. Gilbert recorded three strikeouts – two coming in the first inning on changeups – and allowed only one hit, which was a weak flair into the outfield off the bat of first baseman José Abreu, the 2020 American League MVP.
Sunday will be an interesting day for how the Mariners utilize their pitchers.
With Gilbert unlikely to pitch again until his next scheduled turn in the rotation, Seattle will have to figure out how to get through the remainder of that game.
The second game of the day will also be a test for the Mariners as staff ace Marco Gonzales, who was the scheduled starter for Sunday, is not with the team as he’s heading home to be with his wife for the birth of their child, per 710 ESPN Seattle Mariners insider Shannon Drayer. The White Sox will have 2015 American League Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel on the mound in the second game of the day.
