Football 101: How new Seahawks OC Shane Waldron can make life easier for Russell Wilson

Feb 27, 2021, 10:18 AM

For the last few weeks, all of the talk regarding Russell Wilson and the Seahawks has had to do with last season and the acrimony apparently stemming from it.

Lest we forget, Seattle is trying to turn a new leaf in 2021.

Age hasn’t caught up with K.J. Wright, but will Seahawks re-sign him?

Sure, Wilson wanted to throw more during the second half of the 2020 season, and Pete Carroll did say he wants to return to a more balanced offense this year. But the Seahawks also made a change at offensive coordinator a day after Carroll’s comments, and the new hire isn’t somebody who’s coming to town to run an old school, smash mouth, run-first kind of offense.

Shane Waldron joins the Seahawks as the new OC after having a hand in the Los Angeles Rams’ system during a tenure as their passing game coordinator, and the Rams’ offense that Waldron learned under head coach Sean McVay has plenty of concepts that Wilson could benefit from.

In the latest Football 101 video from former NFL linebacker and current Seahawks Radio Network color commentator Dave Wyman, he takes a close look at one of those concepts – the Rams’ “the illusion of complexity.” Not only could Waldron put it into effect for Wilson and Seattle’s offense, but it’s something that was used to great success against the Seahawks by Los Angeles last season, as Wyman shows in the video. He additionally breaks down a similar play Seattle ran in 2020 that is an example of how easily Wilson could take to Waldron’s system.

Keep your eye out for more Football 101 videos from Wyman throughout the offseason here on the site or on our YouTube channel, and catch him talking Seahawks and much more from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Wyman and Bob.
