The Seahawks on Tuesday revealed the uniform numbers that they’ve assigned to their 10-member draft class, but it sounds as though one number isn’t totally settled yet.
Chris Clemons wore No. 91 during his first stint with the Seahawks and then the last two seasons in Jacksonville. It now belongs to Cassius Marsh, who was drafted a few months after Seattle released Clemons and apparently doesn’t want to give it up.
Michael Bennett did some lobbying on Clemons’ behalf when he joined “Justin and Gee” on Tuesday.
“All we’ve got to do is get everybody on Twitter to tell Cassius Marsh to take off 91 and give it back to Chris Clemons,” Bennett said. “I don’t know why Cassius Marsh wants 91 when Chris Clemons has made a lot of plays in that number. If you have Twitter, Instagram, I want you to guys to tweet Cassius Marsh and tell Cassius Marsh to take No. 91 off and build his own number.”
This type of situation is common in the NFL, and it’s often resolved with a payment. The going rate seems to vary. This 2014 story from Pro Football Talk has a few examples, including one involving wide receiver Eric Decker and the Jets. He reportedly bought No. 87 from a teammate for $25,000 and a streak dinner when he signed with the Jets in free agency two years ago.
Does Clemons want No. 91 that bad? For now, he’s listed as No. 90.
Below are the jersey numbers for Seattle’s draft picks. Of note: tight end Nick Vannett is the only player who was assigned the same number he wore in college.
G/T Germain Ifedi: 76
DT Jarran Reed: 93
RB C.J. Prosise: 22
TE Nick Vannett: 81
G Rees Odhiambo: 70
DT Quinton Jefferson: 92
RB Alex Collins: 36
C Joey Hunt: 53
WR Kenny Lawler: 11
RB Zac Brooks: 30
Recently signed quarterback Jake Heaps has been assigned No. 5.
