Ex-49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is reportedly no longer a part of the Seahawks’ plans, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The news isn’t too surprising – the Seahawks either scrapped or postponed a meeting with Kaepernick in early April and, after drafting FIU’s Alex McGough, have four quarterbacks on the roster.

Seahawks sign Stephen Morris as backup quarterback

Still, Seattle was the only team to host Kaepernick for a visit in the last two years, and – at least a few weeks ago – it seemed that if a team were to sign him, it would be the Seahawks. Seattle also hosted Kaepernick ahead of the 2017 season.

While Kaepernick was linked to Seattle this week, that meeting was related to a collusion grievance filed against the NFL. According to Schefter, Kaepernick’s attorneys took depositions from Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider.

Kaepernick originally filed his grievance in October 2017. By that time, the former starter had remained unsigned for several months after being released by the 49ers.

Kaepernick has pointed to his political protests as the reason behind his unemployment. Beginning in August 2016, Kaepernick, then with the 49ers, began holding a silent protest during the national anthem to call attention to racism and police brutality against communities of color. The protest drew both criticism and support, and gained widespread attention over the course of the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons. By the close of 2018, a number of NFL players – and people across the country – had joined the protest (with Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril, and Jeremy Lane being notable local participants).
