For the first time this season, the Mariners will start their regular left fielder on Wednesday night.
Ben Gamel has been activated from the 10-day disabled list, which he began the season on due to an oblique strain suffered early in spring training.
Seager, Diaz the difference-makers for the Mariners
With Gamel returning to the active roster, the Mariners made room by optioning Ariel Miranda, Tuesday’s starting pitcher, back to Triple-A Tacoma a day after recalling him.
The addition of Gamel gives the Mariners five outfielders currently on the roster. The others are Mitch Haniger, Dee Gordon, Guillermo Heredia and Ichiro Suzuki, who Seattle signed shortly after Gamel’s injury.
Without much of a spring training, Gamel is coming off a 10-game rehab assignment in the minor leagues – five each with High-A Modesto and Triple-A Tacoma.
In his first full season in the majors, Gamel hit .275 with 68 runs, 27 doubles, 5 triples, 11 home runs and 59 RBIs for the Mariners in 2017.
Gamel is in the lineup for the Mariners against Houston right-hander Gerrit Cole in Wednesday night’s 7:10 p.m. game on 710 ESPN Seattle.
Miranda allowed one run on six hits and four walks over five innings on Tuesday night, a 4-1 Mariners loss to the Astros.
