Russell Wilson had to wear a hard mouth guard for four days after taking a hard hit to the jaw from Cardinals linebacker Karlos Dansby in the Seahawks’ 22-16 win over Arizona last Thursday. Doctors told him he was lucky not to have suffered a fracture, the Seahawks’ quarterback told reporters Friday.

Dansby was fined $18,231 for the hit.

“I didn’t (have a fracture), I got images and everything like that. Sure enough, I was lucky,” Wilson said. “It was pretty close. Doctors were like, ‘Man, any harder and we’d probably have to wire your mouth shut.’ So that was a good thing that didn’t happen.”

The injury also forced Wilson to stick to a liquid diet.

“Really for the first two-and-a-half, three days I couldn’t really eat anything; just doing smoothies and all that kind of stuff.

“It just kind of reset my jaw, (they) had to reset it again,” Wilson continued, after assuring reporters he was now fine. “May be talking out the side of my mouth for the rest of the year, but I’ll be alright.”

The same hit landed Wilson and the Seahawks in hot water for a possible violation of concussion protocol. The league’s review is ongoing (more on that here).
