WSU names John Johnson interim athletic director

Oct 16, 2017, 4:14 PM

John Johnson has been tabbed by Washington State University to be interim athletic director, the school announced Monday, a day after previous athletic director Bill Moos left for the same job with Nebraska.

Johnson, who is currently WSU’s senior associate director of athletics, will assume the role Wednesday until a permanent replacement is named.

Mike Leach has no plans to follow Moos to Nebraska

“John is an outstanding administrator and a fierce advocate for the Washington State University athletics program,” WSU President Kirk Schulz said in a press release. “I couldn’t ask for a better-qualified individual to make sure that Cougar athletics continues to excel as we search for WSU’s next athletic director.”

Johnson has previously served as athletic director at Eastern Washington University and Weber State University.

Washington State also announced the members of its athletic director search committee. They are Schulz, former WSU quarterback Jack Thompson, WSU women’s basketball coach June Daugherty, alumnus Gary Schneidmiller, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Chair Abu Kamara, Faculty Athletics Representative Nancy Swanger, and alumnus Greg Rankich.
