The Mariners have added a fresh arm to the bullpen ahead of Wednesday’s series finale with the Astros, recalling right-handed reliever Evan Marshall from Triple-A Tacoma.
Fellow righty reliever Casey Fien has been optioned to the Rainiers, which not only makes room for Marshall in Seattle but also clears up a spot on the 40-man roster for Boog Powell, who has been reinstated to Tacoma after serving an 80-game suspension for violating the MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program
Marshall, who the Mariners claimed off of waivers from the Arionza Diamondbacks last week, has an incredible comeback story from taking a line drive off his face in 2015, which he told to “Danny, Dave and Moore.” Marshall, who will turn 27 next week, has a 4.50 ERA with 70 strikeouts over 85 relief appearances in the MLB. He appeared in one game for the Rainiers, striking out two in 2/3 of an inning.
Fien, 33, has allowed seven runs in 5 2/3 innings over five appearances this season with Seattle, his first with the organization.
Powell, 24, had a strong spring training with the Mariners, hitting .577 (15 for 26) with nine runs, a double, two triples and six RBIs.
The Mariners finish up their series against Houston at 7:10 on 710 ESPN Seattle.
