The Mariners have traded backup catcher Jesus Sucre to Tampa Bay for a player to be named later or cash considerations. The club announced the trade Wednesday, a week after Sucre was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma. He was designated for assignment on Jan. 26.
The Mariners’ 40-man roster remains full with the trade.
Sucre, 28, spent parts of four seasons with the Mariners, hitting .209 in 88 games. He appeared in only nine games over two stints with Seattle last season.
As Mariners insider Shannon Drayer noted, Sucre would have a hard time competing for playing time in Tacoma with several other catchers, including Tuffy Gosewisch, who was claimed off waivers last month.
This is the 37th trade the Mariners have made since Jerry Dipoto became their general manager in September of 2015. Drayer looked back on the other 36 in this post.
