The Mariners made a roster move Saturday morning prior to their second game in Chicago, placing right-handed pitcher Nathan Karns on the 15-day disabled list with a low back strain and recalling fellow righty Cody Martin from Triple-A Tacoma to take his place in the bullpen.
Karns’ last appearance was in Friday’s blowout loss to the Cubs, giving up five runs on three hits and three walks in two innings. The 28 year old began the season in the starting rotation but was demoted to a long relief role after making it through the sixth inning in just five of 15 starts. He has a 5.15 ERA and 1.48 WHIP.
Martin, 26, is back up for his second stint with the Mariners this season. The former Gonzaga Bulldog has appeared in two MLB games this season, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk in four innings pitched. He has primarily been a starter with the Rainiers this season, maintaining a 9-6 record with a 3.95 ERA and 96 strikeouts over 22 games (17 starts).
