Seahawks’ 2016 first-round draft pick Germain Ifedi has plenty of legends to look up to from Seattle’s historic offensive lines. But when it came to making the ceremonial first pitch at Saturday’s Mariners’ game, he followed in the footsteps of The Kid – from the grass, just in front of the bump.
“I’ve got to do it like Griffey,” Ifedi told seahawks.com, referencing Ken Griffey Jr.’s opening day toss earlier this year. “Griffey did it from the grass, I’ve got to do it from the grass. I can’t go against one of the greats.”
In his first appearance in front of Seattle’ sports fans, the 6-foot-5, 325-pounder’s throw found the heart of the plate but landed, well, a bit low, from the grass in front of the mound. It was the Texas A&M product’s first visit to Safeco Field, and he was joined by fellow rookies C.J. Prosise, Nick Vannett, Joey Hunt, Tanner McEvoy and Alex Collins.
