The Seahawks are reportedly losing a versatile member of their offense.

Seahawks reportedly will re-sign defensive tackle Jarran Reed

George Fant, an offensive tackle who also had a regular role as a tight end in certain situations for Seattle, has agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with the New York Jets, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler.

The “legal tampering” period of free agency started Monday. NFL teams will officially be allowed to sign free agents on Wednesday, when the new league year begins.

The 27-year-old Fant has been with the Seahawks since 2016, when the converted former college basketball player was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Western Kentucky. He played in all 16 games in each of the 2018 and 2019 seasons after missing the entire 2017 season with a knee injury suffered in the preseason. He started 24 of the 46 games he appeared in for Seattle since 2016.

It became a regular occurrence in Seahawks games to hear the phrase “No. 74 reporting as eligible” in the past two years when Seattle began using the 6 foot 5, 322-pound Fant a few times a game at tight end. He was targeted twice by quarterback Russell Wilson in games – once apiece in 2018 and 2019 – and hauled in one, a 9-yard reception in a Week 13 win over the Minnesota Vikings in 2018 (watch here).

Fant was a potential option to take over at right tackle if the Seahawks lost starter and fellow free agent Germain Ifedi. Now the attention turns to Ifedi to see where he lands.
