Mariners video: Which players have a future in Seattle and who doesn’t?

Oct 24, 2019, 2:32 PM

In the second Mariners video podcast of the offseason from 710Sports.com, Shannon Drayer and James “Boy Howdy” Osborn address some of the biggest questions facing the team going into 2020.

Why Mariners’ reported interest in OF Marcell Ozuna is hard to buy

Those questions have everything to do with players from the 2019 squad that may or may not have a future in Seattle beyond this year.

This episode of the “vodcast” spends time on the World Series and the managerial carousel that has been the big story since the end of the MLB regular season. But once that’s out of the way, Boy Howdy had a list of Mariners players he sees as on the bubble when it comes to being a part of the core for Seattle as its rebuild continues. And with each player, the question is whether or not they will be a member of the Mariners the next time they are considered legitimate contenders to make the postseason.

The players in question:

• Outfielder Mitch Haniger, who made the American League All-Star team in 2018 but didn’t play after suffering a ruptured testicle on June 6 and finished 2019 with a .220 averege, .770 OPS and 15 home runs in 63 games.

• Starting pitcher Marco Gonzales, who was one of just 15 pitchers to top 200 innings in 2019 and finished with a 16-13 record, 3.99 ERA and 1.31 WHIP.

• Catcher Omar Narváez, who had a career year at the plate with a .278 average, .813 OPS and 22 home runs but still has questions about his defense behind the plate.

• Outfielder Domingo Santana, who was among the American League leaders in RBIs for a good portion of the season but struggled defensively, struck out a lot and didn’t play much for the last month and a half due to an elbow injury.

• First baseman Daniel Vogelbach, Seattle’s lone All-Star in 2019 who hit a team-high 30 home runs but scuffled for much of the second half.

• Outfielder Mallex Smith, the MLB’s leader in stolen bases with 46 but a player who had unexpected struggles at both the plate and in the field.
