Clayton: Hawks lost to Ravens in a game of bold — and bad — decisions

Seattle has agreed to acquire Diggs from the Detroit Lions, along with a seventh-round NFL Draft pick in 2021, for a fifth-round pick in next year’s draft, according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The 26-year-old Diggs was a sixth-round selection of the Lions’ in 2015. In 65 career games, the fifth-year pro has 40 starts, six interceptions and three forced fumbles. Originally a cornerback, Diggs started splitting time between corner and strong safety in 2017 and was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2018.

Diggs, who checks in at 5-foot-9 and 197 pounds, has started all five games he has played in this season for Detroit but missed an Oct. 14 game due to a hamstring injury. He signed a three-year contract extension last year with the Lions for a reported $18.6 million and was named a team captain prior to this season.

The Texas Longhorns product is the younger brother of former longtime San Diego Chargers defensive back Quentin Jammer.

Seattle could certainly use some added depth at safety, as both Bradley McDougald (back) and Lano Hill (elbow) were out of action in Sunday’s 30-16 Seahawks loss to the Baltimore Ravens. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Seahawks are also looking for a replacement for Tedric Thompson, who has given up a few big pass plays this season, including a 50-yarder from Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to wide receiver Miles Boykin in the first quarter last Sunday.

Diggs would likely be available to make his Seahawks debut on Sunday in Atlanta, where 5-2 Seattle will play the 1-6 Falcons at 10 a.m. on 710 ESPN Seattle and KIRO Radio 97.3 FM.
