The Mariners Friday officially recalled left-handed pitcher Justus Sheffield from Double-A Arkansas. A roster spot was made available after right-handed pitcher Cory Gearrin was claimed off waivers by the New York Yankees.

Drayer: M’s set for important final month after strong road trip

Sheffield had already been scheduled to start Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays, though New York’s waiver claim makes the roster move a bit easier for Seattle. The Mariners’ roster now sits at 37.

The 23-year-old Sheffield, who was originally acquired as part of a trade that sent former Mariners pitcher James Paxton to the Yankees, is ranked as Seattle’s third-overall prospect.

The 33-year-old Gearrin made 48 total appearances with the Mariners, including two starts. He finished his Seattle stint 0-2 with a 3.92 ERA.

Drayer: Fraley not only Mariners prospect you’ll see this week
