Mariners manager Scott Servais could be sporting a new hairstyle if closer Edwin Díaz keeps his phenomenal 2018 season going.

Stelton: Mariners building much-needed cushion for postseason race

Earlier this year, Servais was teasing Díaz about the design Díaz has shaved on his head – but then offered to get a matching cut if the right-hander notched 50 saves.

“I’ll be glad to do it,” Servais said on MLB Network Thursday morning. “It’s certainly something that came up earlier in the season. We were joking and I said, ‘Yeah Edi, you get your 50 saves and I’ll get my hair cut like you.’ I got his attention quick. He said, ‘You’ll use my barber?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ He said, ‘In the middle of the clubhouse?’ I said, ‘No problem.’ Fifty saves is quite a feat (but) he’s off to a great start. He’s pitched great all year so far. Hopefully we can keep him healthy and continue to ride him.”

Díaz recorded his 30th save of the season in the Mariners’ 8-7 win over the Orioles in extras Wednesday night. With it, he became the 12th pitcher in MLB history to record 30 saves prior to the All-Star break.

With their 50-31 record, the Mariners are off to one of the best starts in franchise history (the team didn’t record their 50th win last season until late July). It’s a promising first half for a team hoping to break a 17-year playoff drought – currently the longest postseason drought for any major sports team.
