Mariners bring Gwynn on board

Oct 28, 2011, 11:42 AM

The Mariners cannot announce this until after the World Series is wrapped up but the team has hired Chris Gwynn, the brother of Tony Gwynn to be the director of player development.

Gwynn comes from the Padres organization where he rose from scout to director of player development two years ago. He played for the Dodgers, Royals and Padres in a career that lasted ten years.

Gwynn will replace Pedro Grifol who most likely will be reassigned in the organization. No word as of yet to what Grifol’s new position will be but he has expressed a desire to get back out on field and to that end he is currently managing several Mariners on the Lara Cardenales team of the Venezuelan Winter League. He managed the Mariners Everett affiliate from 2003-2005 and also was on the bench as a coach after Don Wakamatsu was fired in 2010.
