Mariners injury report: Latest on Gamel, Cruz, Zunino and more

Mariners general Jerry Dipoto joined Danny, Dave and Moore for his weekly Jerry Dipoto Show on Thursday and shared the latest on Seattle’s players on the disabled list.

Here’s a quick look at the status of five Mariners regulars currently on the DL.

Drayer: Kyle Seager more comfortable than ever in April

• Left fielder Ben Gamel, who previously was thought to be in line to play in Friday night’s homestand opener against Oakland, may be a day or two behind in his return from an oblique strain suffered in spring training.

“That’s still a little bit up in the air,” Dipoto said of Gamel’s status for Friday’s game. “I would say for certain (Gamel will be activated) by the time we are playing Houston (on Monday) but maybe not this weekend.”

• Designated hitter Nelson Cruz (ankle sprain) could be back before the Houston series.

“We also anticipate that he’ll be back sometime this weekend,” Dipoto said.

• Catcher Mike Zunino would be next on the list to return. He has been out with an oblique strain he suffered March 28.

“Zunino we are expecting sometime between now and the end of the homestand,” Dipoto said. “Still a little bit of a moving target – he feels good but we want to make sure that once he returns to the field we’re not dealing with an ongoing or lingering issue. We want to solve the problem and get him out there at 100 percent, or as close to that as we can.”

• First baseman Ryon Healy (ankle sprain) and starting pitcher Erasmo Ramirez (lat strain) may be back with the Mariners by the end of the month.

“I don’t think it’s going to be terribly long,” Dipoto said of how long Healy will be out for a injury he suffered on April 7. “Perhaps by the time that we get to the activation of Erasmo Ramirez, which we think will be about the third week of April, that we’re looking around that time for Ryon to return as well.”
