Pete Carroll: Seahawks are ‘fortunate’ to have Jeremy Lane after Richard Sherman’s injury

The Seahawks are looking for extra help at cornerback after Richard Sherman ruptured an Achilles tendon, but Pete Carroll is glad they already had a good amount of depth built up at the position.

That’s specifically in reference to Jeremy Lane, who appears to be in line to get the first crack at the starting spot opened up by Sherman’s injury.

Carroll: Seahawks’ Earl Thomas expected back vs Falcons

“We’re very fortunate to have Jeremy, who’s played and started – he was the starter for us going into the season – jump back in on the playing field,” Carroll told Brock and Salk on Monday morning. “Few teams would have that. I think our depth, it’s speaking to us a little bit.”

The Seahawks should be considered especially lucky to still have Lane since they had agreed to send him to the Houston Texans just weeks ago as part of the trade to acquire left tackle Duane Brown. Lane failed his physical with Houston, though, and Seattle re-worked their trade for Brown as Lane returned to the squad.

Seattle will still need to find an extra corner with Lane moving up on the depth chart, however. That will reportedly be former Legion of Boom member Byron Maxwell.

“Of course the depth is going to get challenged in a couple spots, as it has. I feel pretty confident,” Carroll said.

Another cornerback option is DeShawn Shead, who started opposite Sherman in 2015 and 2016, but he is unlikely to be on the field any time soon despite making progress in his rehab from a torn ACL suffered in the playoffs last season.

“He’s at a bit of a plateau right now that he’s trying to get through and over and that remains to be seen. He’s doing everything he possibly can,” Carroll said. “He’s in great shape. If you watch him work out, he can run forever, he can do everything, but he’s just not quite back fully yet where he has all the movement that he needs and extension that he needs. Until that’s safe, then he’s still working at it.”
