On the second day of the Mariners’ 2017 season, their number of roster moves also hits two.

Seattle announced Tuesday afternoon that it has claimed right-handed pitcher Evan Marshall off of waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and have moved left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly to the 60-day disabled list.

By moving Smyly to the 60-day DL, the Mariners created an open spot on their 40-man roster for Marshall.

Marshall, 26, will report to Triple-A Tacoma. He had an 8.80 ERA with nine strikeouts in 15 relief appearances (15 1/3 innings) for Arizona in 2016, and has appeared in 85 MLB games over the past three seasons. In 2014, he had a 2.74 ERA in 57 appearances for Arizona. The Diamondbacks designated him for assignment on March 28 after he posted a 3.38 ERA in six spring training appearances (5 1/3 innings).

Smyly, 27, was diagnosed with a left arm flexor strain last week and is expected to miss six to eight weeks. With his DL placement retroactive to March 30, Smyly will be not be eligible to be activated until May 29. He was an offseason acquisition from Tampa Bay and slated to be one of Seattle’s five starting pitchers before his injury.
