Bump’s Game-Changing Plays: How Seahawks responded to pick-six

Nov 7, 2022, 6:33 PM

The biggest play in the Seahawks’ Game 9 meeting with the Cardinals in Arizona could have been one that didn’t go Seattle’s way.

The fact that it wasn’t is a testament to how well the Seahawks’ offense is functioning right now.

Rost: Just as surprising as Seahawks’ 6-3 start is that their offense is better

Arizona’s Zaven Collins intercepted Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith and returned the ball 30 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, giving the Cardinals a 14-10 lead. But only briefly.

That’s because the Seahawks wasted no time coming up with a response – well, actually they were patient about it, but that’s kind of the point. Following that pick-six, Smith led Seattle on a 13-play, 75-yard drive that took 6:35 off the clock and ended with a touchdown that put Seattle in the lead for good.

In this week’s edition of Michael Bumpus‘ Game-Changing Plays, he puts that all under the microscope – what happened on the pick-six, but also two big completions by Smith to wide receiver Tyler Lockett that were important to Seattle’s response.

Here are the three plays Bump breaks down:

• 30-yard interception return for a touchdown by Arizona’s Xaven Collins

• Tyler Lockett’s 12-yard reception on third-and-12 to keep Seattle’s long drive alive

• Lockett’s nine-yard touchdown catch to end the drive and put Seattle ahead 17-14
