The injury that took Seahawks star wide receiver DK Metcalf out of action Sunday isn’t as bad as feared.

Rost: Seahawks flipped big questions to become one of NFL’s best stories

On Monday’s edition of The Pete Carroll Show on Seattle Sports, the Seahawks head coach had promising news on the left knee injury to Metcalf.

“Got a really good report this morning that he does not need surgery,” Carroll said in his weekly conversation with Brock and Salk.

Carroll added that Metcalf “hurt his patellar tendon some,” clearing up the exact nature of the injury suffered on an incomplete pass to a diving Metcalf in the end zone during the first half of Seattle’s 37-23 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Inglewood, Calif.

“There’s some thought that there’s been an old injury and some stuff is complicating it, but it’s a great report,” Carroll said of Metcalf’s patellar. “I was just with him in the training room and he’s really positive about it. I don’t know what that means in terms of coming back and how soon and all of that, but his attitude is exactly where you would want it to be.”

Metcalf is “determined to practice on Wednesday,” Carroll said, but acknowledged that’s probably unrealistic right now.

“I can’t imagine that that’s where we are. We don’t know,” he said.

The 24-year-old Metcalf has blossomed into a star since being taken in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Seahawks out of Ole Miss. He’s a one-time Pro Bowler and the holder of the Seahawks’ single-season record for most receiving yards, having amassed 1,303 in 2020.

Seattle signed Metcalf to a three-year, $72 million contract extension prior to this season, which was to be the last year on his rookie deal.

Prior to the injury, Metcalf had made 31 catches on 52 targets for 418 yards and two touchdowns in seven games this season.

It seems likely at this point that next Sunday’s game against the New York Giants will be the first missed by Metcalf in his career due to injury.
