Mariners Breakdown: Chaos ball returns? A look at AL’s wild card leaders

Aug 17, 2022, 6:24 PM

The Mariners were in need of some good vibes after a disappointing series loss in Texas last weekend hurt them in the American League’s wild card race. Apparently a trip to Anaheim was the remedy.

Mariners hit four homers, beat Angels 11-7 to complete sweep

Seattle found their old friend “chaos ball” in the first two games against the Angels, using their speed on the bases to take advantage of some poor defense by their opponents in the ninth inning of a victory on Monday night, then having another ninth inning explosion in a second straight win Tuesday night. And in the finale of the series on Wednesday afternoon, they found their power stroke with four home runs to beat the Angels 11-7 and clinch a sweep that pushes Seattle to the front of the wild card standings.

To be fully transparent, we usually do our weekly Mariners breakdown videos with Bob Stelton on Mondays, but we noticed a pattern: the Mariners had lost a few weekend series in a row but have been having a lot of fun during the week (you may remember what they did against the Yankees at T-Mobile Park). So we decided to wait a couple days this time and see how the Angels series went, and, well, we’re not mad about it.

In this week’s video with Bob, he shares his thoughts on:

• Whether or not the Mariners are truly back
• How the excitement for the M’s around town has been
• What is making the M’s fun to watch
• Bob’s growing appreciation of Mariners utility player Sam Haggerty
• What we want to see from the upcoming road series at Oakland

For more from Bob, be sure to catch Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob from 2-7 p.m. every Monday through Friday. And subscribe to the Seattle Sports YouTube channel here to make sure you never miss the latest videos from Bob and the rest of our team.
