The Seahawks are spicing up the preseason.

Seattle is trading defensive back Ugo Amadi to the Philadelphia Eagles for wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside, as reported by Tom Pelissero of The NFL Network. The Eagles confirmed Monday afternoon that they had agreed to terms of the deal with the Seahawks.

The trade is a swap of two young players that have struggled to make an impact since their respective teams drafted them in 2019.

Another move the Seahawks made Monday likely sheds light on the need for more depth at wide receiver, with wideout Cody Thompson being placed on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury he sustained in Saturday’s preseason loss to the Steelers.

Amadi, 25, has played 47 games since Seattle made the Oregon product a fourth-round pick, starting 12 of those games. A safety in college, Amadi has been more of a nickel cornerback and special teams player in recent years. He made one interception, six passes defensed, a forced fumble, 54 combined tackles and two tackles for loss in 17 games (seven starts) in 2021.

The addition of the 25-year-old Arcega-Whiteside to the Seahawks roster is quite interesting because the Eagles drafted the former Stanford standout seven picks ahead of the Seahawks’ selection of DK Metcalf in the second round of the 2019 draft. Metcalf has blossomed into a superstar while Arcega-Whiteside has struggled in his three NFL seasons thus far.

Arcega-Whiteside played 16 games in 2021 with two starts, making just two receptions on five targets for 36 yards. His best season was as a rookie when he had 10 catches for 169 yards and a touchdown. Arcega-Whiteside’s best game also came in 2019, coincidentally against the Seahawks. He caught five passes for 43 yards in what was a 17-9 Seahawks win in Week 11.

He has caught just 16 of 35 targets as a pro.

The Seahawks are currently gearing up for their second preseason game, which is set for Thursday at 5 p.m. at Lumen Field against the Chicago Bears. It’s a short turnaround coming just five days after their preseason-opening loss Saturday at Pittsburgh. Coverage of Thursday’s game will be carried on Seattle Sports Station 710 AM and KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM starting with the pregame show at 3 p.m.

Rookie class may be why Seahawks lean toward Geno at QB
