The Seahawks are entering a new era without quarterback Russell Wilson and linebacker Bobby Wagner, but Seattle will have key continuity on the back end of its defense. Pro Bowl free safety Quandre Diggs is reportedly staying in the Pacific Northwest.

Lefko: Drafting Malik Willis would explain Seahawks’ Wilson trade

Diggs, 29, hit free agency for the first time in his career on Monday, but he apparently didn’t stay on the open market too long as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Pro Bowler is returning to the Seahawks on a three-year deal worth up to $40 million.

Diggs came to Seattle in a 2019 midseason trade with the Detroit Lions and quickly became the defense’s top playmaker. In five games after that trade, Diggs recorded three interceptions. He followed that up with back-to-back seasons with five interceptions in 2020 and 2021. Diggs earned Pro Bowl honors each of those seasons.

Diggs played in every game for the Seahawks in 2020 and 2021, but he broke his leg and dislocated his ankle in Seattle’s regular season finale in January. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this month that Diggs should be ready for training camp, however. Diggs has posted multiple promising updates on Twitter, as well.

Diggs entered the offseason as one of 15 Seahawks hitting the open market, but he was arguably the top Seattle free agent due to his age and production. Now, he and his good friend Jamal Adams, the Seahawks’ starting strong safety, will hold down the back of Seattle’s defense for years to come as Adams is signed through 2025 and Diggs is reportedly signed through 2024.

With Diggs’ deal reportedly done, the Seahawks still will need to address the secondary as starting cornerback D.J. Reed and fill-in starter Sidney Jones are free agents.
