An ongoing neck issue for Chris Carson will leave the Seahawks without their top running back on Thursday night.

Carson headlines the Seahawks’ list of inactive players for the 5:20 p.m. game against the rival Los Angeles Rams. Carson’s name appeared on the injury report this week with a neck injury, and head coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday in a press conference that the injury is something Carson has been managing for some time.

“He has had kind of a long-term, I guess it would be kind of a condition that he’s dealt with, and sometimes it flares up and sometimes it doesn’t,” Carroll said. “We’ve tested him and MRI’d him and all that kind of stuff, and it’s no different than it’s been. It’s just obviously inflamed right now, and so we’ve got to see if it quiets down.”

With Carson out and fellow running back Rashaad Penny on injured reserve, Seattle’s starting running back on Thursday will be Alex Collins. The good news is Collins is coming off a strong performance last Sunday, rushing for 44 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries plus making two catches for 34 yards to help spark the Seahawks in a win over San Francisco.

Here is the rest of the Seahawks’ inactive list:

Seattle will have both pass rusher Benson Mayowa and defensive lineman L.J. Collier active for Thursday. Mayowa was listed as questionable with his own neck injury going into the game, while Collier has been a healthy scratch three out of four games this season after playing and starting all 16 regular season games for the Seahawks last season, as well as the team’s playoff loss to the Rams.

The Seahawks also activated wide receiver Phillip Dorsett from the practice squad for the contest. He signed with Seattle ahead of the 2020 season but never played due to a foot injury. He initially signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason, but he was cut and then signed with the Seahawks practice squad. That comes shortly after the team placed rookie receiver Dee Eskridge on injured reserve due to a concussion he suffered in Week 1.

Also of note, the Seahawks did not activate tight end Gerald Everett from the reserve/COVID-19 list in time for the game against his former team.

The Rams’ inactive list consists of QB Bryce Perkins, OLB Chris Garrett, OT Alaric Jackson, TE Brycen Hopkins and DL Bobby Brown.
