With reports surfacing late last week that former All-Pro receiver Josh Gordon is set to be reinstated by the NFL after receiving his sixth suspension since entering the NFL in 2012, the Seahawks, naturally, were tied to him after having signed him twice since 2019.

Seahawks Inactives: Mayowa, Blair out; Vikings missing RB Dalvin Cook

Prior to Sunday’s Week 3 clash with the Minnesota Vikings, Seahawks general manager John Schneider all but confirmed that Seattle will aim to sign Gordon for a third time if he is indeed officially reinstated.

“When things are taken care of officially, we’d like to get rolling with him,” Schneider told Jen Mueller on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Seahawks Pregame Show on Sunday.

Gordon, an All-Pro with the Cleveland Browns in 2013, has had a number of suspensions due to off-field issues and substance abuse matters since entering the league in 2012.

After being waived by the New England Patriots in 2019, the Seahawks claimed Gordon and added him to the mix. In five games, Gordon caught seven passes for 139 yards. But after a Week 15 Seahawks victory over the Carolina Panthers, Gordon was suspended yet again for substance abuse and missed the rest of the season.

The Seahawks re-signed Gordon in free agency that next offseason. He was conditionally reinstated in late 2020 and was to be eligible for the last two weeks of the season, but his conditional reinstatement was rescinded and he was indefinitely suspended once again.

The Seahawks have a potent receiver duo in DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, but the rest of that position group is less proven. Rookie receiver Dee Eskridge was slated to be the No. 3 receiver, but he missed Week 2 and will miss Week 3 due to a concussion. Freddie Swain, a sixth-round pick in 2020, is also on the roster, as is Penny Hart, who entered the league as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2019.
