Clayton: Don’t rule out Tatupu returning to Seahawks

Lofa Tatupu is still searching for a new team after he was released by the Seahawks last month.

ESPN’s John Clayton thinks the Bears and Raiders are the likeliest landing spots for the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker, and he expects that to happen “probably by next week.”

The Seahawks cut Tatupu four days into training camp after he reportedly refused to rework his contract, which was scheduled to pay him more than $4 million this season.

Seattle re-signed linebacker Leroy Hill to a one-year minimum deal and plugged David Hawthorne into the middle linebacker spot that Tatupu occupied for the last six seasons. But Clayton hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Tatupu swallowing his pride and returning to the Seahawks.

“I don’t think that they had plans to bring Kelly Jennings or Leroy Hill back. I think that both were kind of out of sight, out of mind,” Clayton told Brock & Salk on Thursday, “but all of the sudden they lose Will Herring [to the Saints in free agency], next thing you know they’re calling Leroy Hill. And then they didn’t hit anything in free agency at cornerback so they called back Kelly Jennings.

“So yeah, I think that what may have been on the agenda last week can change based on an injury or some other circumstance that happens in the game tonight.”
