Seahawks Football 101: Jordyn Brooks’ promising plays in Arizona

Alright, we know it hasn’t been a banner year so far for the Seahawks’ defense, especially coming off Seattle’s first loss of the season last Sunday in Arizona. There’s a reason 710 ESPN Seattle’s Bob, Dave and Moore does a segment called Roses and Thorns after every Hawks game, though.

Potential Seahawks trade targets who could help struggling pass rush

Usually you can find something good from a game, even if the result was disappointing. Case in point: Seahawks rookie linebacker Jordyn Brooks.

Seattle’s top pick in the 2020 NFL Draft returned to a starting role Sunday after missing the previous two games with a knee injury, and he showed why Seattle used a first-round selection on him with his play in the 37-34 overtime loss to Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals.

This week on Dave Wyman’s Football 101, 710’s resident linebacker has a pair of plays where Brooks shows – in two very different ways – why the word “promising” keeps coming up to Wyman when he sees him play.

The first play to be broken down is Brooks showing an impressive recognition of what to do when the Seahawks are playing zone and an opposing tight end runs a deep crossing route. Wyman, a former NFL player who now serves as color commentator for Seahawks radio broadcasts, finds what Brooks did impressive because deep crossers have long been a problem for Seattle, and what Brooks does to prevent a pass from being completed is something he didn’t have experience with during his college career at Texas Tech.

Then, Wyman focuses on Brooks making a huge stop of Murray on third-and-goal from Seattle’s 2. That factored into the Seahawks forcing Arizona to turn the ball over on downs following Cardinals safety Budda Baker’s 90-yard interception return – you know, the one that was surprisingly ended by DK Metcalf’s incredible effort to catch Baker for a tackle on what appeared to be a sure pick-six.
