Seahawks notebook: Brandon Browner gets a raise

RENTON – The Seahawks didn’t have to give cornerback Brandon Browner a raise, which might make it all the more important that they did.

Browner was already under contract for $555,000 in 2013, the final season of his three-year deal, and if there was any Seahawk that had a right to feel underpaid it was Browner.

Camp Carroll: Day 2 overview

Pads: Helmets only
Duration: 2 hours, 20 minutes
Not practicing: FB Michael Robinson, LB Heath Farwell
PUP: WR Percy Harvin, TE Zach Miller, DE Chris Clemons, DL Greg Scruggs, CB Tharold Simon, RB Robert Turbin
Non-football Injury list: LB Korey Toomer

He made the Pro Bowl in his first season with the team, and after spending four seasons in Canada, he could be feeling an urgency to cash in. And while it’s unknown how much of a raise he got on the final year of his contract, Browner indicated it was enough to make him smile.

“It’s a good gesture,” he said Friday after the Seahawks’ second training-camp practice. “I’m a team guy. Mostly, it’s about playing football. That’s what I want to do here.”

The NFL Players Association records haven’t been updated to reflect the raise, which also could have been provided in a bonus or salary. Browner didn’t specify the increase. What’s clear is that Seattle took a step to engender some good will in someone who has been a starter since he arrived.

As for free agency and a new contract? Browner’s not in too big a hurry.

“Man, I’m here to play football,” he said. “We already make more than an average guy. I’m happy and satisfied. I was up there in Canada, making $50,000. My deal is four times what I was making up there, so I’m satisfied.”

Seattle signed safety Kam Chancellor to an extension this offseason and both cornerback Richard Sherman and safety Earl Thomas could be in line for new contracts after this season. Browner, who will be an unrestricted free agent, hopes he’s not going anywhere.

“I want the Legion of Boom to really mean something when it’s all said and done with,” Browner said. “Not just something we made up last year.”
