Football 101: Jamal Adams, Quinton Dunbar solve a play that has been a problem for the Seahawks

Sep 16, 2020, 1:09 PM

Something that has been an issue in recent seasons for the Seahawks’ defense is the fly sweep.

Heaps: Seahawks’ tempo on offense should be an advantage vs Patriots

The play is kind of like it sounds – a wide receiver sweeps in from one edge of the field to take a handoff from the quarterback, then keeps flying towards the other sideline and turns upfield looking for some positive yardage.

It has worked a lot against the Seahawks, especially when employed by the NFC West rival Los Angeles Rams. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that in Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season, the Atlanta Falcons – who are coached by former Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn – gave the fly sweep a shot. One big difference, however – Seattle’s secondary doesn’t feature the same defensive backs as before.

The Hawks made a pair of big trades in the offseason to bring in All-Pro safety Jamal Adams and cornerback Quinton Dunbar, one of the highest-rated players at his position. And when the Falcons tried a fly sweep with wide receiver Calvin Ridley on the third play of the second quarter, it didn’t go so well for Atlanta.

In the first Football 101 video of the season, former NFL linebacker, current Seahawks radio color commentator and 710 ESPN Seattle host Dave Wyman takes to his trusty whiteboard to show how Adams and Dunbar came up big in solving a play that has given the Hawks a lot of trouble over the years.
