The Mariners have lost one veteran reliever for the time being due to injury and will be turning to another one to take his place on the 28-man roster.

On Monday, the Mariners announced that right-handed reliever Carl Edwards Jr. was being placed on the 10-day injured list with a forearm strain in his throwing arm. In a corresponding move, the Mariners recalled right-handed reliever Bryan Shaw from the team’s alternate training site.

Edwards, 28, has made five appearances this season for Seattle and has allowed one run on two hits with six strikeouts and one walk over 4 2/3 innings pitched, good for a 1.93 ERA. He also earned just his third career save against the Angels on Aug. 5. Edwards signed with the Mariners this offseason after spending last season with the Cubs and Padres.

Shaw, 32, was a late acquisition by Seattle after the Rockies released him shortly before the 60-game season began. The veteran reliever had a successful start to his career with Arizona and Cleveland, as he had an ERA in the low 3.10s through his first seven seasons. While with Cleveland, Shaw led the MLB in appearances three times. He signed a big deal with Colorado before the 2018 season and has struggled since, posting an ERA of 5.93 in 2018 and 5.38 in 2019.

Shaw had a rough start to his Mariners tenure, as in four games he’s given up 10 hits, 10 earned runs, walked four, hit one batter and struck out one. His ERA is 27.00 and his walks and hits per inning pitched is 4.200. Shaw and utility man José Marmolejos were optioned last week when rosters shrunk from 30 players to 28.

Shaw will be in uniform for Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers, which is the first game of Seattle’s eight-game road trip. After three games against the Rangers, the Mariners travel to Houston for three games and the to Los Angeles for two games against the Dodgers before returning home on Aug. 19 for two more games against the Dodgers.
