The Mariners have gotten into the MLB trade deadline mix, albeit with a minor trade.

Mariners reportedly getting trade interest in Domingo Santana

Seattle swung a deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday night, sending utility player Kristopher Negrón to L.A. for infielder Daniel Castro.

Castro will report to Triple-A Tacoma, leaving an open spot on Seattle’s 40-man and active rosters that outfielder Keon Broxton, who Seattle claimed off waivers from Baltimore on Saturday, filled before the Mariners started their road trip this Tuesday in Texas.

Even if the trade isn’t a blockbuster, it is certainly in line with the Mariners’ desire to stockpile younger players, as the 26-year-old Castro is seven years Negrón’s junior.

An amateur free agent signing of Atlanta in 2009 out of Mexico, Castro made his MLB debut with the Braves in 2015. He has appeared in 98 games in the majors, hitting .210 with three home runs, four doubles, 11 walks and a stolen base in 286 plate appearances with Atlanta (2015-16) and Colorado (2018). He has been granted free agency three times in his career, including last offseason before signing with Los Angeles.

In 45 games with Oklahoma City, Castro hit .241 (40 for 166) with a home run, six doubles, 13 walks and 15 stolen bases in 166 plate appearances.

A 2017 MiLB Gold Glove winner, Castro has split time at second base, shortstop and third base, with second being his primary position, in both the majors and minors.

Negrón played 10 games with Seattle this season, including starts in the outfield in five of the Mariners’ last six games. He also played 18 games for the M’s in 2018. This season he is hitting .217 (5 for 23) in the majors, while in Triple-A he has a .310 average with 12 home runs, 15 doubles, four triples, 61 RBIs and an .899 OPS in 82 games.

The Dodgers become Negrón’s fourth MLB team. He previously played with Cincinnati (2012, 2014-15) and Arizona (2017-18).
