The Mariners have acquired backup catcher Welington Castillo in a trade with the Cubs in exchange for reliever Yoervis Medina, the club announced Tuesday.
The Mariners’ press release notes that the club will make a corresponding 25-man roster move once Castillo reports.
Castillo is 28 years old, a native of the Dominican Republic and has hit .252 in parts of six major-league seasons with the Cubs. That includes a .163 average with two home runs and five RBIs in 24 games this season.
Castillo is out of options.
Medina made 12 appearances with the Mariners this season before being optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.
