Danny Valencia will make his first appearance at third base for the Mariners with Kyle Seager out for a second straight day due to illness in Wednesday’s 12:40 series finale against the Baltimore Orioles.
Valencia came up as a third baseman, and while he learned to play first base and corner outfield positions in recent years, 2017 is the first season in which third wasn’t his primary position. An acquisition of Seattle last offseason, he has played 103 games at first and appeared in the outfield twice this year.
Mariners snap five-game losing streak with 3-1 win over O’s
Also in the Mariners’ lineup, Guillermo Heredia is playing center field and hitting second and first baseman Yonder Alonso will hit fifth behind cleanup man Nelson Cruz.
In other news, right-handed pitcher Christian Bergman cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma a day after being designated for assignment.
