THE LEAD:
Rumors are continuing to fly that the Pac-10 is poised to steal six teams away from the Big-12 to create a 16-team conference that would include six of the nation’s top 14 media markets.
The one school that is officially on board so far is Colorado, and today we had CU football coach Dan Hawkins on the program. We talked with him about joining the Pac-10 and his thoughts about the potential addition of more teams.
On joining Pac-10:
I think most of our fans are pretty fired up. Of course we have long tradition of playing Nebraska who’s been our rival … and certainly you lament that. There’s a lot of history there and you hate to lose that. But by and large when you look at the big picture I think most people are pretty fired up.
On how Colorado handled the situation:
It becomes a little bit like musical chairs and you don’t want to be the one person standing there with nowhere to sit when the music stops, so you better get out front. I thought our people did a good job with that because I think there was a strong feeling that the Big-12 was not going to hold together.
On a Lighter Note:
The World Cup got under way this morning with a 1-1 draw between Mexico and the host nation, South Africa. Kevin was up bright and early to watch the action, but found his viewing experience diminished by the plastic horns, called vuvuzelas in South Africa, that much of the crown was blowing. Like many others, Kevin said it felt like the match was taking place in a bee hive. Here’s what it sounded like
