Bump’s Seahawks Breakdown: Why run defense will step up vs Cardinals

Oct 14, 2022, 4:23 PM

The Seahawks enter their Week 6 clash with the Arizona Cardinals at 2-3, and there’s a strong case to be made that Seattle should be 3-2 or even 4-1 this season despite there being low expectations for the team entering this season.

But the Seahawks find themselves under .500 ahead of their NFC West showdown in Seattle because of their defense, namely their run defense.

Seattle has had its share of issues defensively in recent years, and that’s resulted in the Hawks finishing at or near the bottom of the NFL in yards per game. The difference between the last few years and the start of 2022, though, is those yards came through the air. This year, the run defense has mightily struggled.

The Seahawks enter Week 6 dead-last in total defense at 430 yards per game and they’re also last in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game at 170. That has played a major role in Seattle currently ranked 31st in the NFL – second to last – in points per game allowed at 30.8.

All that being said, former NFL receiver Michael Bumpus thinks that this is the week the Seahawks get their run defense in check as they face the Cardinals and dual-threat quarterback Kyler Murray. Bumpus, who hosts Bump and Stacy on Seattle Sports 710 AM every weekday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., explained why he thinks that during his latest video breakdown for Seattle Sports 710 AM’s YouTube page.

You can watch and listen to Bump’s thoughts on the Hawks’ run defense at this link or in the video player at the top of this story.

And in addition to hearing Bump every weekday, you can catch him during every Seahawks game as he hosts the pregame, halftime and postgame shows for the Seahawks Radio Network, which includes Seattle Sports 710 AM.
