The Seahawks have signed linebacker Mychal Kendricks, a deal reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter to be for one year. And while that’s notable in and of itself, what’s even more notable is why he is available in the first place – he was released by the Cleveland Browns after he was charged with insider trading, something he pled guilty to last week.

Kendricks isn’t expected to be sentenced until Jan. 24, and according to Schefter the Seahawks will put him right to work.

Kendricks, 27, faces up to 25 years in prison for pleading guilty and could also be subject to discipline under the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Schefter reports he may face only 30 to 37 months in prison based on federal guidelines. Kendricks allegedly profited nearly $1.2 million by using non-public information he received from Damilare Sonoiki, a global investment firm banker, in exchange for $10,000 and a Eagles tickets. He and Sonoiki were charged with one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud and one count of securities fraud.

Kendricks spent six seasons with Philadelphia before signing with the Browns on a one-year deal in the offseason. He was released by Cleveland after news of his insider trading charges surfaced.

A 2012 second-round pick of Philadelphia, Kendricks made 51 tackles including two sacks in 15 games (13 starts) last season for the Eagles.

To make room for Kendricks on the 53-man roster, the Seahawks waived linebacker Jermaine Grace with an injury designation on Friday.
