All-Star designated hitter Nelson Cruz will miss “a couple days” with a foot contusion, Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais told reporters Wednesday.

With Canó’s suspension, Mariners prepare for Gordon at 2B

“Nellie’s sore today,” Servais said. “He was sore last night. He got smoked pretty good. We’re actually really lucky. When he started limping off the field, Nellie’s a big dude and he’s putting all his weight on you, I’m like ‘This is not gonna end well.’ Fortunate for us nothing’s broke, but he’s gonna be out a couple days.”

Cruz managed to dodge a stint on the disabled list – Servais expects “three or four rounds of treatment” will be enough for recovery.

Cruz was hit by a pitch from Rangers lefty Brandon Mann in the fourth inning of Seattle’s 9-8 win over Texas Tuesday night. Initial x-rays were negative.

Cruz is the second Mariner in three days to miss games as a result of being hit by a pitch. Second baseman Robinson Canó suffered a broken bone in his hand Sunday when he was hit by a pitch from the Tigers’ Blaine Hardy. Canó was placed on the team’s 10-day disabled list, though that absence was exponentially extended by an 80-game suspension announced Tuesday.

Notes

• Pitchers James Pazos and James Paxton have both recovered from bouts of food poisoning. “(Pazos) and Paxton were the two guys affected by it,” Servais said. “They went to eat somewhere. Wherever they went, I wouldn’t go back.”

• Christian Bergman was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to start Wednesday’s game for the Mariners, and reliever Erik Goeddel was designated for assignment to make room on the active roster. Though Bergman didn’t need to be added to the 40-man roster, the Mariners had to designate Goeddel in order to option him to the Rainiers because he is out of minor-league options. The Mariners are hoping he will clear waivers – if a team does claim Goeddel, it must add to its 25-man roster to secure his rights. The Mariners needed a spot starter due to playing a doubleheader last Saturday in Detroit.
