Richard Sherman will make his return to CenturyLink Field in 2018, but it won’t be in a Seahawks uniform.

The former Seahawks cornerback has signed a 3-year deal with the San Fransisco 49ers.

The team has since confirmed the signing, originally reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the deal is worth $39 million.

Sherman, 29, was released by the Seahawks Friday after a seven-year career in Seattle.

Clayton: With Sherman’s departure, CB yet another hole for Seahawks

“Obviously I want to go to a contender,” Sherman told 97.3 KIRO’s Gee Scott Friday, when asked where he hoped to sign in free agency. “I play at a high level and I’ve always been a guy that can work well with others and can continue to elevate as my teammates elevate, and elevate others. In Seattle we had a lot of guys playing at a high level regardless. We all just had to fit in like puzzle pieces and play off of each other, and I feel like we all did that very well and that’s why we had the success that we had.

“Would I go to a young secondary that was like we were when we were younger, and help them grow and help them advance? Sure, if the number looks right and the situation was comfortable for me and my family, then sure.”

49ers’ general manager John Lynch appeared to confirm the news with a photo Saturday evening.

The signing keeps the three-time All Pro in the NFC West, where he’ll face the Seahawks twice per year.
