Danny, Dave and Moore: Is Byron Maxwell addition a necessity or ‘why not’ deal for Seahawks?

The addition of cornerback Byron Maxwell may give the Seahawks some extra depth in the secondary, but with Richard Sherman out for the season, Kam Chancellor’s status for at least next Monday’s game up in the air and Earl Thomas coming off a hamstring injury, the Legion of Boom is as banged up as it has ever been.

“All of the sudden what’s been the strength of this defense is really up in the air,” Danny O’Neil said Monday on 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny, Dave and Moore about the team’s secondary.

The signing of Maxwell two weeks after he was cut by the Miami Dophins only highlights that point, added O’Neil.

“Of all the alternatives that are there, he’s great. He’s familiar with your system,” O’Neil said of Maxwell, who spent four seasons in Seattle before leaving as a free agent after the 2014 season. “He’s been better in your system than he’s been anywhere else, but reality is two weeks ago he was available too and Seattle didn’t feel the need to have him there. It shows there’s some uncertainty.

“It’s better to have Byron Maxwell than not have him, but the fact that they are seeking out someone from their past to provide a little insurance here shows you that the waters could get a little rough here as they make the turn into the second half of the year.”

For Jim Moore, however, the addition of Maxwell doesn’t necessarily indicate that the Seahawks are desperate – especially since he’s still being paid out his full contract by Miami and therefore was a cheap signing for Seattle.

“He’s not going to be the same guy he was when he left here in Seattle three years ago,” Moore said, “but still at the price you’re getting him, it’s kind of a ‘why not’ deal. Let’s bring him in, see how he does, and what do you have to lose?”
