The Seahawks are bringing back at least one key member of their defensive line that was set to hit free agency.

Seahawks reportedly lose George Fant to Jets in free agency

Defensive tackle Jarran Reed is re-signing with Seattle on a two-year deal, the team announced Monday night. The contract is worth $23 million, according to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero.

Reed is part of a trio of starting Seahawks defensive linemen that were set to become free agents this week, with the others being defensive end Jadevon Clowney and defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson. Clowney has received the most attention, and while it’s believed the Seahawks have interest in re-signing him, he’s reportedly looking to become the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. Seattle is unlikely to be the team to foot that bill.

As for the 27-year-old Reed, the Seahawks will no doubt be hoping for him to bounce back to his 2018 form when he registered 10.5 sacks, 50 combined tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 24 quarterback hits and two fumble recoveries.

Reed reacted to the news Monday night on his Twitter account.

Reed was suspended for the first six games of 2019 for a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy stemming from a May 2017 incident in which a woman reportedly claimed Reed assaulted her at a home in Bellevue. He was neither arrested nor charged.

In 10 games after his suspension in 2019, Reed had two sacks, 20 combined tackles, eight QB hits, a forced fumble and a pass defensed.

The Seahawks drafted Reed in the second round (49th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Alabama. Besides the suspension, he has missed only two games in his four-year career, and has started 47 of the 56 games he has played in.

The two-day “legal tampering” period ahead of NFL free agency started Monday, which allows all teams to negotiate with players two days before they officially become free agents. Teams will be allowed to sign free agents on Wednesday, which will be the official start of the 2020 NFL league year.
