The Seahawks have lost another key player to a lower leg injury.

Rashaad Penny, Seattle’s second-year running back, reportedly has a torn ACL and will be out until 2020 training camp, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Penny left Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams in the first quarter with an injury to his left knee. He sent an ominous-sounding tweet in the third quarter of the game, and after Seattle lost 28-12, head coach Pete Carroll delivered the news that Penny had a “significant” ACL sprain. And while he didn’t say the ligament is torn, anytime you bring up an ACL, you’re in treacherous waters.

Carroll seemed to confirm the worst fears in his Monday afternoon press conference, signaling that Penny won’t return this year even though they are still waiting on an official diagnosis.

The loss of Penny is tough for two reasons. Not only has he been a solid contributor for Seattle in recent weeks, but this puts to end the first prolonged period of success for Penny in the NFL. The Seahawks’ 2018 first-round draft pick, Penny struggled more often than not in his rookie season, and he started a bit slow in 2019, as well. But entering Sunday, he was coming off the best two-game period of his professional career.

On Nov. 24, Penny ran for a career-high 129 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. It was his second career 100-yard game. He followed that up on Dec. 2 with 74 yards and a TD on 12 carries, plus 33 receiving yards on four catches.

On Sunday, he made his first touch on a 16-yard reception on Seattle’s opening offensive series. That was also the play during which he suffered his injury.

The Penny injury is the third of a similar nature to a key Seahawks offensive player this season. Tight end Will Dissly was lost for the season in October with a torn Achilles, and center Justin Britt went down with a torn ACL just weeks later.
