Monday was a big day for anybody who follows UW Huskies football. It was the defensive backs’ turn under the spotlight at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, which included Washington safety Taylor Rapp and cornerbacks Bryon Murphy and Jordan Miller.

Blue 42: Which UW Huskies senior has most to gain at combine?

The big stories to come out of their workouts was Rapp’s quickness and Murphy’s size. Rapp, who is from Bellingham, had the top short shuttle time among all of the DBs at the combine, and while Murphy was slower than anticipated in the 40-yard dash, he also had 14 more pounds on his frame than usual.

On Tuesday morning, 710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock and Salk put Rapp and Murphy under the microscope during their Need to Know segment. Here’s a breakdown of what Brock Huard and Mike Salk had to say.

Taylor Rapp

Salk: “Taylor Rapp was tremendous in the 3-cone (short shuttle) – the best 3-cone drill in three or four years, so congratulations to those guys who continue to help their draft stock.”

Huard: “You watch those guys work in the drills and it was unbelievable. I mean they are so quick. (Washington defensive coordinator) Jimmy Lake is an NFL guy. He knows what the deal is at the next level. He recruits those guys, he develops those guys. And now Bleacher Report in its newest mock draft has the Seahawks at 21 taking… Huskies safety Taylor Rapp.”

Bryon Murphy

Huard: “What was most important to Byron Murphy was to take his weight from 176 to 190. He added 14 pounds from his playing weight and probably lost a tenth of a second on his 40 time – I think he’s probably a high 4.4 guy when he’s 176 pounds, he was 4.55 electronically at 190.”

Salk: “When Murphy didn’t run well at the combine, did that give scouts and GMs a chance to lick their lips? ‘Great. Awesome. Other people won’t be on him and we can get the player we know has been productive and likes to hit from the cornerback spot.'”
