Salk: Mariners need to find a use for Félix that isn’t starting

Just minutes after the team announced it had acquired left-handed reliever Zach Duke from Minnesota, reports surfaced that Seattle had also traded for right-handed reliever Adam Warren from the Yankees. The Mariners made it official Monday afternoon.

The Mariners sent international signing slot money to New York to complete the deal. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reports the signing money going to the Yankees is worth $1.25 million.

Warren, 30, is 0-1 with two holds, a 2.70 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 37 strikeouts over 24 games (30 innings) this season. He is holding right-handed hitters to a .169 average and .517 OPS, while lefties have a .291 average and .801 OPS against him.

Warren has spent the majority of his seven-year MLB career with New York over two stints, with a short stay with the Cubs in 2016 in between. He spent over a month on the 10-day disabled list earlier this season due to a strained back.

Over his career, Warren has a 3.40 ERA. His 65 relief appearances of at least 1 1/3 scoreless innings pitched since 2014 rank third among all MLB pitchers over that span. He will be a free agent at the end of the season.

The Warren trade is the third to upgrade Seattle’s bullpen since last Friday, when the Mariners acquired righty Sam Tuivailala from St. Louis.
