Mariners notebook: Gordon Beckham selected; James Paxton co-AL Player of the Week

The Mariners will turn to Gordon Beckham at second base while they wait to find out how long All-Star Robinson Cano will be out with a fractured right fifth metacarpal.

Beckham, 31, is a nine-year MLB veteran who has played for five teams in his career. He played 11 games for the Mariners in 2017, hitting .176 (3 for 17) and committing no errors in five games at second base, four at third base and one at shortstop. In 25 games with Triple-A Tacoma this year, Beckham is hitting .300 with a .912 OPS, four home runs, 15 RBIs and 17 runs scored.
Beckham is in the lineup at second and hitting ninth for Monday’s makeup game in Minnesota, set for 4:10 p.m. on 710 ESPN Seattle. You can find the Mariners’ full lineup against Twins right-hander Jake Odorizzi (3-2, 3.83 ERA) at the bottom of this post.
Beckham was selected from Triple-A and added to both the 40-man and 25-man rosters as Cano was placed on the 10-day disabled list. He is set to see a specialist Tuesday in Philadelphia to examine the fracture in his hand, which he suffered Sunday when he was hit by a pitch by Detroit’s Blaine Hardy.
Paxton named co-AL Player of the Week
Throw a no-hitter, get named one of the American League’s Players of the Week.
That was the case for Mariners lefty James Paxton, who became just the second Canadian ever to throw a no-hitter and the first to do so in his home country last Tuesday in a 5-0 win over Toronto. He finished the week with a 1-0 record, 1.80 ERA, 11 strikeouts and three walks over 15 innings in two starts.
Paxton shares the award with Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor, who hit .600 with a 1.400 OPS over the week to earn Player of the Week honors for the second straight week.
It is the third Player of the Week award of Paxton’s career, tying him with Randy Johnson for the most by a Mariners pitcher.
For the season, Paxton is 2-1 with a 3.52 ERA, 71 strikeouts, 19 walks and six quality starts over nine outings (53 2/3 innings).
